In celebration of the 36th anniversary of Black History Month, Nike is introducing a new, limited-edition 2012 Black History Month Collection featuring premium footwear from Nike Basketball and Nike Sportswear, along with select apparel. KD’s signature Nike Zoom KD IV is a part of the 2012 Black History Month Collection.

The collection celebrates the achievements and pioneering spirit of three important teams: 1996 USA Basketball Women’s team, 2002 Brazil Men’s Soccer team, and the 2008 Kenyan Long-Distance running team. These teams answered the call to greatness and their legacy continues to uplift and inspire their communities.

NIKE designers developed a signature graphic print and distinct colors that are featured on the shoes. This motif is inspired by the vibrant colors of International African culture, drawing visual cues from Kenyan beads, to the Brazilian Carnivale, to African-American quilt making which originated in the southern United States.

In addition to the shoes, select apparel styles include the Nike Destroyer jacket, T-shirt and snapback hat.

In keeping with a tradition of honoring this holiday by giving back to organizations that work to inspire youth towards greatness, NIKE, Inc. will make a financial contribution to Big Brothers Big Sisters of America.

The Nike Black History Month Collection will be available at select retailers this month and at NikeStore.com beginning February 11.

In his one season at the University of Texas, KD completed one of the greatest seasons in the history of College Basketball. In 35 games at UT, he averaged 25.8 ppg (first in Big 12, fourth in the nation), 11 rpg and 1.9 bpg. He scored 20-plus points 30 times, posted 30-plus points 11 times and recorded 20 double-doubles during his one year as a Longhorn. Kevin exploded for 37 points and a career-high 23 rebounds at Texas Tech and again posted 37 points along with 10 rebounds, a career-high 6 assists and a career-high six blocks vs. Kansas in the Big 12 Tournament finals. He was named the Big 12 Tournament Most Valuable Player after scoring a tournament record 92 points.

Due to those spectacular performances, KD earned National Player of the Year honors from The Associated Press, NABC, USBWA, CBS/Chevrolet and The Sporting News. He became the first freshman in NCAA history ever to win the prestigious John R. Wooden Award, the Naismith Award and the Adolph Rupp Trophy. Kevin earned consensus First Team All-American honors, becoming just the third freshman in NCAA history to earn that honor, joining Wayman Tisdale (1983) and Chris Jackson (1989). Kevin was named Big 12 Freshman and Player of the Year, earned First Team All-Conference honors and was named to the league’s All-Defensive Team. On February 25, 2009, the University of Texas retired Kevin’s No. 35 jersey making him just the third player in the 103-year history of the program.

Basketball Never Stops!

Today, the Nikestore.com team announced that the Nike Zoom KD IV Year of the Dragon colorway will be releasing on Nikestore.com at Midnight Eastern Time on February 3rd. It was first thought that the KD IV Year of the Dragon would be a China only release, so this is great news for fans of this colorway.

Expect this to be a very limited release. However, remember that you can also customize your own version of the KD IV Year of the Dragon on January 31st on NIKEiD.

Earlier this summer, Panini America launched their Panini HRX Video Trading Cards, featuring KD, Kobe Bryant, Blake Griffin and John Wall. Each player has 10 of these cards randomly inserted into Panini 2010-11 Totally Certified Basketball packs. Now Panini has announced that the players listed above have one gold version of the HRX Autographed Video Trading Card that will be inserted randomly into 2010-11 Totally Certified Basketball packs.
