My Favorite Athletes Today

kdlabel

What’s going on everyone? We had another tough game against the Lakers yesterday. We were right there with them late in the game, but the ball just didn’t bounce our way at the end. We just have to give those guys credit and use it as a learning experience.

While most of the sports talk on here is about basketball and my team, I do have love for a lot of other sports and athletes. People on Twitter have asked me who my favorite athletes are outside of my Thunder teammates and I’ve got a few I’m gonna share with you.

I consider Mike Vick, Derrick Rose, Troy Palamalu and Wayne Rooney my favorite athletes today. So yeah, I have a few. I’m just another sports fan who likes to see athletes make unbelievable plays and how they make plays look so easy from just using their God-given abilities. I think that’s phenomenal.

Derrick Rose, just how high he can jump for such a small guy, how quick he is. Wayne Rooney, just how fearless he is, how small he is, but he gets the job done out there. I had a chance to meet him this summer as well when I was out in Las Vegas. I didn’t know too much about soccer until someone told me that was Wayne Rooney, one of the best soccer players in the world. So I looked him up, followed him after that and became a big fan of his ever since. And Mike Vick, after everything he’s been through, to comeback and lead that team to the playoffs and have a great, MVP-type of a season. And Troy Palamalu does it year in and year out. He always manages to anchor that Steelers defense. So I really like those guys for what they bring to their sport and their team.

How about you guys? Who are your favorite athletes today?

Talking College Hoops

kdlabel

What’s going on everyone? It’s been a crazy week for me after All-Star Weekend, the All-Star Game and getting right back in the grind of the NBA season. We had a good win against the Clippers on Tuesday, but then came up a bit short in the final minutes against the Spurs last night. We had some good looks at the end of the game last night, but the ball just didn’t bounce our way.

Enough NBA talk for now. Let’s talk college hoops for a little bit.

Y’all know I’m a Texas Longhorn all the way! As usual, I’ve been keeping a close eye on my boys this season. I know they had a tough loss to Nebraska over the weekend but other than that they’re playing unbelievable. Their defense is Grade A. They’re doing everything they need to be doing right now. That’s what great teams do. Hopefully they’ll make it far. I’m really pulling for them and they’ve got to keep pushing.

As far as other teams go, I’m actually a really big Duke fan. Playing for Coach K this summer really put in perspective what type of coach he is, what type of team he has. I’m a big fan of Duke and I’ve been trying to watch every game.

One of my childhood friends is Duke Guard, Nolan Smith. I’ve known him since I was 9, 10 years old, when we first started playing against each other. He’s having a phenomenal type of year! A Player of the Year type of year, First Team All-American type of year…so he really deserves a lot of credit. I think a lot of people are forgetting about him with all these young freshmen coming in. But Nolan’s having a phenomenal year and hopefully he’s able to cap off a great season.

I know Jimmer Fredette of BYU is having a heck of a season, too, and I actually know him a bit as well. This past summer he was at my camp and also played with the Select squad against the U.S.A. team and he held his own, so hopefully he has a great season as well.

So who do you all like in college hoops right now? Who’s your early favorite heading into the Tournament? Let me know in the comments section.

Getting Ready For All-Star Saturday

kdlabel

What’s good everybody? Man, this has been a busy few days for me out here in L.A. and it’s about to get crazier tonight.

My Thunder teammates and I are going to do our best to represent well tonight. Russ is in the Skills Challenge and then I’ll be in the 3-Point shoot out and will also help Serge in the Dunk Contest.

I really hope people are excited to watch Serge because you might be surprised with what he can do. He’s got some things up his sleeve that are going to help him and put him in a position to maybe win it. We’ll see. I’m excited for him. This is an opportunity for him to get his name out there a little more. People are still in the dark about who he is and the type of athleticism he has. He’s going to showcase a lot. I think he’ll show his personality, too. He’s a funny guy. He’s a guy that’s real energetic and hopefully that shows.

About the 3-Point Contest, well don’t worry about me. I talked to Daequan Cook, who won the event two years ago. He told me to take my time. I tried it at first and I was rushing my shots because I didn’t want to lose time. He told me to just take my time because going through those racks isn’t going to take the full 60 seconds so I’m just going to go out there and shoot my shot, have fun and enjoy it. That’s all I want to do.

I’m not nervous, though. It’s basketball at the end of the day. I’m just shooting jump shots. Hopefully I do a good job, but if I don’t I really appreciate the opportunity and will enjoy the experience.

Wish me luck!

Checking in from All-Star Weekend

kdlabel

What’s going on everyone? I’m out here in L.A. for the NBA All-Star Weekend and things are really starting to pick up. I just wanted to say that I’m so blessed to be an All-Star for another season and even more blessed that you all voted me in as a starter.

A lot of people have been asking me what I’m looking forward to the most about All-Star Weekend, and really I’m just excited about going out there and playing in the All-Star Game. That’s the best part about it. Watching the game for so many years growing up, to finally be a starter is a great feeling, especially on one of the biggest stages and in one of the best cities in the world in Los Angeles. It should be a lot of fun.

But I’m sure you might know that this weekend is more than just playing basketball. A lot of people think you just show up for the game and play but it’s not like that. You can get your schedule months in advance but of course once you get in here there’s stuff you want to do for your sponsors and endorsement opportunities. But it comes with it. It’s something you’ll deal with for two or three days just to say you’ve been a part of it. I’m blessed to be in so many great positions.

I’ve already been to a Foot Locker store, a Nike store and a Skull Candy party, and that was just on Thursday. Today’s going to be just as busy except I’ll be talking to the media and practicing. I’ll hit you up tomorrow morning with my thoughts on the Dunk Contest and 3-Point Contest.

End of the Year Pigskin Talk

kdlabel

What’s good everyone? It’s coming down to the final hours of 2010! We have a game tonight against a tough Atlanta Hawks team, so make sure you check us out.

Beyond the New Year, you know what else is going on…the college football bowl season and the NFL Playoffs.

Now I’m not going to really get into it because neither of my teams are going to be playing for a championship. My Texas Longhorns had a hard season and so did my hometown Redskins.

Those were two tough seasons. But you’ve got to go through the tough times to get to the better times and I know firsthand about that. Hopefully we’ll be alright next year. I watched the Redskins more than I watched my Longhorns this season. It was tough watching the Longhorns because we used to win almost every game every year. It’s tough to watch, but I still support them.

As far as the national title game goes, I’m going to go with Auburn. A quarterback is your guy. He leads the whole team and controls everything, so I’ll go with Auburn and Cam Newton.

Is anyone rooting for Oregon? And who do you have in the NFL Playoffs? Let me know in the comments section.

All About Christmas

kdlabel

What’s going on everyone? I hope you all had a very happy holidays. I know it’s been a minute since I last hit you all up on my blog, but ever since I returned from the World Championship in Turkey I’ve been in the zone. But I’m back for now, and since this is the holiday season I’m gonna dedicate today’s blog post to Christmas.

By far the best Christmas gift I got this year was a necklace from my mother. Not a choke chain, but it’s a small little chain that I can wear every day, all day. It’s not one of those big diamond chains, but a nice, silver, stainless steel one. It’s got a nice little cross on it. Ever since she gave it to me I’ve only taken it off when I play games or am at shoot arounds or practices. Other than that I won’t take it off.

I remember one year I was in fifth or sixth grade, and my mom told us she couldn’t afford to have Christmas for us. My brother was crying all morning. We liked getting up in the mornings and opening up gifts and when she told us that, throughout the whole day I realized that we couldn’t have a Christmas. So my grandma picked us up and took us to the movies to kind of cheer us up a little bit. And while we were at the movies my mom was getting everything together and wrapping gifts over my aunt’s house because we lived in an apartment. When she walked in the door I thought we were just going to have dinner, but I saw all these gifts under the tree for me and my brother and my mom kind of surprised us and caught us off guard and I was instantly happy. As a kid you always want to celebrate Christmas. You really don’t know too much about what really goes into it, more of the spiritual or religious part of it. My mom caught us right there and surprised us, so that was one of the best ones.

Aside from giving and receiving gifts, this was a special Christmas for me, my family and my Thunder family because we got to host a game. On top of that, all my teammates who are signed to Nike wore my new KD III sneakers. I know I’ve said it before, but it’s just a blessing just to have your own sneaker. Nobody can ever take that away from me, playing on Christmas, winning on Christmas, wearing your own shoes, it was a blessing. Kobe, LeBron and myself were the only Nike players to have their own special Christmas signature shoes, and to be in their company is something that every kid dreams of. To be one of the players to be recognized with a small thing like his shoes kind of brings it back to that I’ve got to continue working and continue pushing.

It’s also been a special holiday because I got to share it with a few of my younger cousins. They’re just wild, man. They wake up early in the morning and play games all day. This has been their time to sit around and chill. They go to school all week, play sports and do homework and just to be out here, they’re just relaxing, sleeping in, playing games all day. Stuff that can’t really do on a school night they’re doing here and to have Christmas away from their parents , watching basketball games, sitting on the floor, they can’t beat that. I’m happy they’re here. They brought us some good luck and I’m glad they experienced that.

So how was your Christmas? Did you get snow? What was the best present you received or gave this Christmas? Let me know in the comments section.

Take care…THUNDERUP!
