Keeping up with KD: The Streak

Sixty-four days, 29 games, 310 made field goals and 288 sank free throws later, and Kevin Durant’s historic scoring streak has come to an end.

Durant’s streak of consecutive games with at least 25 points officially ended at 29 games in Wednesday’s loss to the San Antonio Spurs.

As Durant said after the game, “It was good while it lasted. Teams in this league are too tough for my streak to continue to go on like it did. It was very cool while it lasted. I am very fortunate and privileged to do something like that. I feel very blessed. Any player would remember something like this.”

Oh, the memories.

For starters, Durant’s scoring binge ranked tops among all active players. He had already surpassed Philadelphia’s Allen Iverson and sat behind the legendary Michael Jordan, who scored at least 25 points in 40 consecutive games back in 1986-87. And the Thunder forward became the first player in league history under the age of 22 to string together 29-straight games of 25 or more points.

During that run, the Thunder posted a record of 20-9, with Durant averaging 32.4 points on 50.8% shooting from the field and a whopping 50% (51-for-102) from three-point range.

And through it all, Durant remained level-headed. He put his teammates first. He never spoke about the streak unless he was asked to. Even when he did talk about it, you could tell Durant shied from all the individual attention.

And of all the big-time buckets Durant made during that stretch, it’ll be hard to forget one in particular.

Remember the Thunder’s overtime win over the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden? Of course you do.

The Thunder needed a three-pointer to tie the game with 12.6 seconds left. Durant obliged.

With a sold-out crowd on its feet, more than 19,000 rabid New Yorkers, Durant delivered one of the most clutch shots of his young career. With a solid screen set by teammate Nick Collison, Durant curled off a high pick, caught a pass from Russell Westbrook at the top of the key, planted his feet, elevated and drilled the three-pointer to silence the crowd.

Durant was pumped. He was hopped up on adrenaline. And after he hit the shot he turned to the crowd, with a snarl on his face, and gave them a salute.

Durant looked like a man possessed, a man who was in that proverbial “zone,” one that seemed to stretch back to mid December.

Twenty-nine straight games – that scoring streak put Durant in some rare company.

My Trip to the Harlem House of Hoops

kdlabel

What’s up everyone? We’re back at home after a 2-0 road trip. Great to keep this winning going. While we were in NYC, I had a little event at the House of Hoops in Harlem, right on 125th Street across the street from the Apollo Theater.

Jeff Green, Russell Westbrook and James Harden came with me, so it was pretty nice to have some company.

I’ve been in a few House of Hoops before and I’ve been to the one in Harlem before to look around but this was my first time making an appearance. It was a cool time. There were a lot of kids who came out and supported us. There were a lot of people who like watching us play. It felt good because not too many people know who we are and to come up here in one of the biggest cities in the world, representing the Oklahoma City Thunder, that was awesome.

It was just a question and answer session, I signed some autographs, held a raffle for sneakers and played video games with kids. It was very exciting to do and I had fun. And just being in Harlem, which has so much basketball history in Harlem was pretty neat, too.

As a kid, you know what Rucker Park is and you know about New York basketball and you’ve seen the And-1 tapes and it’s something you wanted to be a part of and followed as a kid. So to come up here and have people know who you are, that’s something that meant a lot to us and hopefully we’ll continue to make them proud as a team and hopefully we come back and have more appearances there.

Alright y’all. That’s it for now. Any of you pick up the KD II’s yet? What do you think of them?

Kevin Durant Selected to Western Conference All-Star Team

OKLAHOMA CITY, January 28, 2010 – Oklahoma City Thunder forward Kevin Durant was named a reserve on the Western Conference All-Star Team the NBA announced today.

“I am both excited and honored to be able to represent the Thunder and our organization as an NBA All-Star,” said Durant. “There are a lot of people who have contributed to this achievement, it is important to me that I recognize the support I have received from my teammates, our organization and my family as well as our fans. I’m looking forward to this experience and am excited to take the floor for the Western Conference.”

Durant becomes the first ever Thunder All-Star and the first franchise All-Star since Ray Allen was named a Western Conference reserve in 2007. This season, Durant is averaging 29.3 points (3rd in the NBA), 7.3 rebounds, 3.0 assists, 1.4 steals and 39.9 minutes in 45 games.

“Kevin, through his commitment, consistency and discipline, has earned this recognition,” said Thunder Executive Vice President and General Manager Sam Presti. “He has worked diligently to improve himself as an all-around player and possesses a deep respect for team and community. We are proud to have Kevin represent the Thunder at NBA All-Star Weekend.”

Since Christmas the third year forward has paced the NBA in scoring with 31.9 points per contest while shooting 51.2% from the field (174-340 FG) including 49.1% from beyond the arc (28-57 3FG). He has scored 30 or more points an NBA-best 25 times this season including 25 or more points in each of the last 19 contests, which in the most in NBA history for a player under the age of 22. Durant is on pace to become just the second player in NBA history, 21 years or younger, to finish the season with a scoring average above 29 points per contest (LeBron James, 31.4 ppg, 2005-06).

The 2010 NBA All-Star Game, which will air live on TNT and ESPN Radio in the U.S., and reach fans in more than 200 countries and territories in more than 40 languages, will be played at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas, before an expected crowd of more than 80,000 – the largest group ever to witness a live basketball game.

KD Featured in Sports Illustrated

Last month it was ESPN the Magazine. This month it’s Sports Illustrated. Chris Ballard produced a great feature on Kevin for this week’s Sports Illustrated that’s a must read. The feature is called “Kicking it up a Notch”. Once you read the article, you’ll understand why KD has quickly become one of the top players in the NBA.

Here’s a little preview of the article:

Despite a nine-man rotation that could be described as the March Madness Traveling All-Stars (average age 23) Oklahoma City finished the week with a 22–18 record, just behind eighth-place Houston in the ultracompetitive Western Conference.

This has led to a natural curiosity about the team and especially the 21-year-old Durant, who heretofore was known primarily for two things: being the national college player of the year as a freshman (at Texas) and scoring a ton of points for a bad NBA team (first the Sonics and then, after the team moved in 2008, the Thunder). The latter leads to pejorative labels, whether deserved or not: Gunner, Guy Who Gets His, Volume Shooter. These days, however, Durant is scoring a ton of points for a winning team, and that is regarded as a different thing entirely. Players who do that are tagged All-Star and Franchise Player and have names like Kobe and Carmelo and D-Wade and Dirk.

Kevin Durant Donates $100K to the Athlete Relief Fund for Haiti

MIAMI – January 18, 2010 – A collective group of professional athletes have joined alliances to provide emergency medical supplies and essentials to those recently affected by the deadly earthquake in Haiti through “Athletes Relief Fund for Haiti”, created by former NBA All Star Alonzo Mourning.

In an effort to provide and encourage relief efforts, athletes like Dwyane Wade, Kevin Durant, LeBron James, Al Horford, Michael Vick and Randy Moss have banned together to contribute approximately $600,000, with Lennar Corporation of Florida matching the fund dollar for dollar with a donation that will exceed $1 Million in aide to support the medical needs of the community.

Mourning requested individual donations from athletes like Dominican Republic native, Al Horford (Atlanta Hawks) and he stepped up by donating an entire game salary to the cause. Other contributions included $100,000 donations from NBA players Kevin Durant (Oklahoma Thunder), LeBron James (Cleveland Cavaliers) and Dwyane Wade (Miami Heat) each.

As one of the first athletes to visit the devastated country last week with Project Medishare, Mourning knows firsthand how crucial the medical supplies are to saving the lives of the people on the island.

“The unified front that these players have shown is amazing. We are going to continue to raise funds and bring awareness to the issues of this beautiful country as they rebuild.” said Mourning.

“The situation in Haiti is devastating. I wanted to do my part, and contribute to the Athletes Relief Fund so the people of Haiti know we care and support them,” said Durant.

Funds raised will be directed to organizations on the ground, specifically Project Medishare which has actively been working to support the Haitian people for 20 years.

Fans and supporters can go the www.amcharities.org and make a tax deductible contribution to support the relief effort.

Project Medishare is dedicated to improving the health and overall well being of the Haitian people by re-establishing the health infrastructure and providing access to agriculture, education, clean water & sanitation, micro-credit in several communities in the Central Department in Haiti.

A growing list of athlete contributors include: Chris Bosh (Toronto Raptors), Caron Butler (Washington Wizards), Kenyon Martin (Denver Nuggets), Clinton Portis (Washington Redskins), Michael Finley (San Antonio Spurs), Ronnie Brewer (Utah Jazz), Devin Harris (New Jersey Nets), Carlos Boozer (Utah Jazz), JR Smith (Denver Nuggets), Anthony Parker (Cleveland Cavaliers), Ben Gordan (Detroit Pistons), Gilbert Arenas (Washington Wizards), Quentin Richardson (Miami Heat), Michael Beasley (Miami Heat).

My New Nike Zoom KD II

Shoes4

What’s good? Not sure if you all heard, but Nike is going to be releasing my new sneaker, the KD II, in January. But you guys can get a sneak peak of it during tonight’s game against the Dallas Mavericks. The game will be on ESPN, so you’ve got to check it out and tell me what you think. The colorway we will be wearing tonight is called the “Creamsicle”.

First off, just to have your own shoe is a blessing. To have Nike on your feet is also a blessing. On top of that, some of my teammates are going to wear my new sneakers tonight, too. It’s great to have that kind of support. For my teammates to represent my shoe feels good. A lot of people are going to see a lot of orange tomorrow, so I’m glad they decided to wear it. They liked it a lot. I brought them out in the summertime to wear, they’re excited and we can’t wait to play in them tonight.

Also, I wanted these sneakers to be affordable for everyone, so they’re only going to cost $85. I remember growing up when I couldn’t afford the Vince Carters or the Jordans or guys who had their own shoes. I always wore the team Nikes, like the Uptempos. I remember one of my teams had the Shaqs. I just had a couple of pairs. I couldn’t really get the Jordans that I wanted but it was always good just to find a shoe to play basketball in. So this time, I thought to myself that I want people to afford it and 85 dollars is the perfect price and hopefully people will start to buy them.

The KD II is different from my first sneaker, although there’s some similarities. The sneaker has a strap on it at the mid sole. It’s not a high top but it’s a mid, almost. It’s a great fit. It has the same bottom as the KD1s that show how I grew up and my workout plans and things like that. It’s pretty cool. One of the numbers on the sole is 108, which is the house number for my grandmother’s house. I used to sit outside of her house almost every day after the school. Another number is 20746, which is the address number of the post office where my mom used to work at across the street from my old house. Those are just some things from my childhood that mean a lot to me.

I gave out the first pair of KD II creamsicles to a guy named Brendan. He was the first person to come and donate at my Giving Tree event last night, so I hooked him up with a pair of shoes. My folks at Nike Basketball are also going to give out a pair tonight during the game, so make sure to follow them on Twitter.

Man, I’m pumped for tonight’s game and for you guys to see my new sneaker. Remember, they don’t come out until January. You can tell me what you think of the KD II in my comments section. Be honest!

Come Support My Giving Tree

kdlabel

kd_givingtree09POSTERweb

Hey Everyone. In the spirit of the Holidays, I am hosting a giving tree on Tuesday December 15th at Penn Square Mall’s CityScape from 6-8 pm. The Giving Tree will benefit kids from Positive Tomorrows and Sunbeam Family Services. Here’s how it works:

1) Come to my giving tree and pick an ornament off the tree to reveal a child’s wish.
2) Shop in the mall for one or more of the child’s wishes
3) Come back to the tree with the gift and receive an autograph from me. People that spend $100 or more on gifts will also receive two tickets to a Thunder game.

Please come out and support this if you can. This is the time of year to help the less fortunate. No kid should have to go through a Christmas without gifts.

God Bless.
