Going for my degree!

kdlabel

What’s going on everyone? Well, we’re back on the road again with two more games to go before the All-Star break, although it won’t be much of a break for me and you know I wouldn’t have it any other way.

So the last time I blogged I had just gotten back from watching my Longhorns beat OSU in Stillwater, and you know it really had me thinking about my year at Texas and how I’ve been going back to school every summer since I left for the NBA. There’s just something about college that keeps me going back.

First off, I love the environment of a school setting, especially in college. I went to a small high school and graduated with 30 people at Montrose Christian. There were just 100 people in the whole school. It was small and I liked it. We never had a football team, never had a baseball team, so at Texas I got to see other sports, I went to every football game and got to see people that I normally wouldn’t see every day.

So these last two summers have been cool just to be back in a school setting first of all, and getting my degree is something I’ve always wanted to do. Nobody in my family has ever done it. My brother is the closest and that’s one thing I want to do. My mom wants me to do it so I’ve got to fulfill my mom’s dreams. It’s also just cool to get back down there and see the guys and workout with them as well.

I’m going for a degree in education and I usually take about two classes each summer. I’ve moved up every year and have thought about maybe staying the whole summer to take four classes, two in the first session and two in the second session but we’ll see how that goes. I have a long way to go but hopefully all I have is time.

I actually have to start thinking about what classes I’ll be taking soon. Last year I picked them out during the season. I just talk to my academic advisor that helped me out when I was there. She does a great job of getting classes ready for me. Sometimes I do it right before I go down there. I just have to go online and register. It’s been cool because she’s been helping me pick out some good classes.

And whenever I go back to school I always stay at Justin Mason’s apartment. He’s on the basketball team and has an apartment off campus. Staying at a hotel would have been a waste of money and not the smartest thing to do. And plus we’ve had some fun times, like we were roommates again because we were roommates my freshman year. We were basically suitemates, so we just shared a bathroom. You never get too big time to sleep on a couch or a floor or even an air mattress, so that’s how I looked at it. I actually had two air mattresses and put them together. You might not believe me but it was pretty comfortable. It was something different but it was all worth it.

I just treat it like I was a college student. I go to class with everyone. I go to study hall with everyone. No one treats me like, ‘oh, that’s KD he plays in the NBA.’ I just go about my business and try to finish school.

And no, I don’t cook when I’m back at college. I go out to eat every night!

Well, that brought back some college memories. How about you guys? You all still in college, going back or already graduated? And did everyone have a good living experience? Hit me up in my comments section.

    Hey Kevin,
Good luck in going back to school. Your education will be something you have after your basketball career. I loved my college years. My wife and I went to Oklahoma Christian University in Edmond for my undergrad. For grad school, we went to.........wait for it....Oklahoma State University. But don't write us off yet, my wife is a South Texan and still roots for UT. I root for them when they are playing an Oklahoma team. But, I am a huge Colt McCoy fan. Look forward to following his career. So, what do you want to do with an education degree? I am always impressed with athletes that are interested in improving themselves in all facets of life. You are definately a role model for our children. Keep it up.

Good for you, KD! I teach at OU, so I'm at college all the time. It's fun to be around college kids; they have so much energy and a zest for living.

Good luck in the All Star Game! We'll be watching you, here in OK.

Damn KD you are killing it everytime I turn on sportscenter they talk about how many games you scored 25+ in a row, I live in San Jose, I saw you light up the Warriors, I am also gonna go to the Kings game in March, I bet you drop 40 on them too in a Thunder victory. I'm def gonna rock my Durant jersey with the matching sneakers. I went to Boston Univeristy for my undergrad it was really fun I miss it now I go to law school at UC Davis in California. That's good to see your trying to finish your education mad props the more you put it off the harder it will get might as well do it while its sorta fun!

I have to so give it to you for staying in school. I have been going to college at for the last two years to better myself and the others in my life. I am now attending Cameron University in Lawton, OK. I want to make a good role model for my two kids. I quit school at 16 due to getting pregnant and married, yet homeschooled myself just to have the satisfaction of a high school degree. I went on to work after the birth of my second kid for six years. The place I worked at closed down as well as me getting a divorce at the same time and I had to opportunity to go back to school so I took it. It is never easy trying to be a college student and raise two kids but it will so be worth it one day when I have that degree in my hand. I truely appreciate everything you do for our community and the great role model you make for my kids. I am actually doing a paper for my speech class on you at this current time. I just wanted to say thanks for just being you.

I am in college right now.. I am a Biology Major and attending University of Tulsa soon, right now needed to get some of my generals out of the way before going to a 4 year college so I am at Tulsa Community College right now. I came back from a tour of duty in Iraq with the Army and since I had lost part of my leg in combat the Army and VA got together and are putting me through school. My wife is in college and I have two sons, one is in high school here in Stroud, Ok and the other is in elementary here in stroud. KD you should be MVP and even if you don't get the appropriate props from the press you do from the fans in OKC.
  • I'm working and going to school. I have 33 hours left. So I'm almost there. I started my college in fall of 1993. Took a few years off while my hubby was in the Army. I joke that as long as I graduate college before my 14 year old son graduates high school then i'm good. So, Just keep taking classes as you can. You will eventually get the degree and make your mom's dreams come true.

"You never get too big time to sleep on a couch or a floor or even an air mattress.." Way to stay humble Kevin, there just aren't enough people like you. Mad respect bro.

Hey KD, that really says a lot of your character going back to finish your degree despite being set fiscally for life with the money being made in the NBA.

I'm wrapping up my third year at UT right now, and I tell you the memories made here, you take all the way to the grave. Nothing really out there like that college atmosphere. We've never met since you drafted into the NBA my first year there, but all my friends that knew you said you were a really cool/chill guy. Harrison Smith used to TA for one of my classes and we would talk about you from time to time.

I'm going to stay the summer in Austin, for the first time I've been here to knock out some classes so maybe I'll run into you sometime. Keep doing what your doing out there in OKC, you guys have a solid team and an awesome coach (Scottie Brooks is the man). You guys are going to become the next trailblazers with all the young talent around you.

Anyways, take care KD. I'll see ya this summer.

  • KD, I've been out of school since 78 but itook 6 yrs to get my degree. I was amazed at how much matured in that time. Nothing exciting like the NBA just a couple of long work breaks between school sessions. So glad to see you setting such a good example for those that don't have NBA tools
  • That's so awesome!
  • Lisa
Kevin I'm going to talk to you like a mother would her son. Most things in life can either be taken, broken, lost or stolen. But an Education is something that nothing or no one can ever take from you. Keep up the good work go for the "Goal" of a higher education!

  • Paul Moerner
I just finished my year of grad school at UT and Austin was awesome (I'm originally from NC). You have a favorite restaurant in Austin? I love Trudy's and Salt Lick.
  • Tray Williams
College is a blast, you never realize how much fun it is until your done with it; I just started Chiropractic school and it's nothing like undergrad, I have no life, but still try to find the time and watch the Thunder. I can't wait until I'm done and can be back in OKC with some season tickets, or maybe even as a chiropractor for the thunder!!!!
  • Kelsey_Rain
Hey KD, I'm in my sophomore year at college and lovin it. Hope you get that degree, it's gonna be an awesome feeling finishing school, I know I can't wait for it.
  • Vinods26
