I Love My Music!

wale1What’s good everybody? We play the Celtics tonight. It’s going to be another tough game, so make sure you check us out!

Not sure if you knew, but I’m a huge music fan. I like listening to a lot of stuff. Right now, I’ve been listening to my boy Wale. He’s from D.C., too, and is a very good friend.

I got to know Wale after my one year of college. He reached out to me. He was a guy that was coming up, just like me. We’re both from the city and we were basically trying to help put D.C. on the map. A lot of people don’t know too much about D.C. as far as the music thing and the basketball thing. We’ve had a couple of players come through but it’s easy to forget us because we’re so small. We just try to do our best to let people know where we came from. We’ve got that instant bond there.

He’s been great. He’s very smart, very intellectual. He knows a lot about life and things he’s been through. He’s been more like a mentor to me, a big brother to me. We help each other out and support each other. That’s what we need as people coming from the same area. It’s been a good relationship so far. He’s been doing very well in his field and I’ve been trying to work hard and get better as well. Like I said, we support each other and he’s going to come out here the next time we have a home stand.

Wale has done a lot. He’s on a Roots song. His own album came out. That’s when I first saw him, in the Roots video. I was like, ‘that’s Wale!’ Then I saw him on the video music awards. He was on tour with Jay Z, he signed with Interscope and Rock Nation. He’s been doing a lot of big things and I’m happy for him and support him. My birthday weekend we had a party together, we kind of celebrated our birthdays together. We became very close. He’s a good friend of mine.

And I actually met him through social networking on Facebook. He was just like, ‘what’s up man? I’m a big fan.’ When we were in D.C. we met up with each other, he gave me some of his CDs. We kind of talked and kicked it from there. Then it went from, ‘let me borrow something from you’ or ‘let’s go to the club.’ We just kind of became friends like that. Like I said, he’s been very supportive of me and I’ve been the same with him. It’s been a relationship that’s going to stick for a while.

Right now, I’m listening to a lot of slow jams, man, of course Lil’ Wayne. I’m trying to get into Gucci Mayne. But the usuals are Beyonce, Kerri Hilson, Ashanti and Usher. I listen to a lot of slow jams before games to get me pumped up. That’s kind of weird, huh?

And I’ve got my guys out here that make music called Rugged Individuals. They make music at my house sometimes and they’re very good, I think. I listen to them before games as well. I’m kind of versatile with my music. I listen to just about everything.

I hooked up with Rugged Individuals when I was at a Guitar Center buying some equipment for my little home studio, just trying to figure out this music thing, something I was intrigued by, and they helped me out. They were like, ‘man you should listen to my CD.’ When people say that I’m like, ‘alright.’ But I threw it in my car and I really, really liked it. I was like, man I could really vibe with that. Then I went back and we exchanged numbers and then they helped me put together my little studio, and ever since then we’ve been cool.

So what kind of music are you all listening to now? Anyone I should check out? Let me know in the comments section.

Alright, I’m out for now. Much Love…

    Yo KD,

Wale is my man. I'm from DC too, and I love how you guys are reppin DC. Wale is really our finest hip-hop artist from DC, and of course youre lighting it up. I have an artist from DC to check out, although he hasn't been getting out there enough. His name is DJ Marvel, hes a producer who has just been putting acapellas over his sick beats–listen to his music and maybe he can get connected with Wale or your boys. Here is a collection of some of his music, you can just listen to it straight from this site. Peep the Sean Taylor tribute pic. http://www.datpiff.com/DJ_Marvel_Dc_United_Coas…

    Hey Kevin,

I agree Wale is pretty good. Since you like slow jams, you should listen to this artist Kevin Cossom. I don't think many people know about him but he has some nice stuff. You might be able to hear his album on imeem.com.

Good post man, Wale is one of my favs. Good to see a great MC like him come up big. If you like Wale, I'd recommend checking out Consequence, Blu, Murs, Hieroglyphics, Charizma & Peanut Butter Wolf, Souls of Mischief, Atmosphere, Immortal Technique, & Little Brother. I have more, but that should get you started haha. Like how Wale started, most of these guys have a big underground fan base. I encourage you to check out Blu. He's from LA, and his lyrics and beats are amazing. He has that chill vibe to him. I also see you like slow jams. I'm a pretty big slow jam fan myself and I'm gonna have to recommend The Foreign Exchange. An MC from Little Brother, Phonte, is in this group and he lays down both rhymes and vocals. Cop the “Leave it All Behind” album. You won't be disappointed. Let me know what you think man! Just email me at jcagan@yahoo.com. Keep up the good work bro.

Hey kevin. I 2 am a huge fan of music. The first time that i heard wale was when i was listening to the roots rising down album and all i can say is that wale is the present and future of hip-hop and i will forever be a fan of his. Some of these so called rappers should take a break, listen to wale's Attention Deficit or any other records that he has done and learn that this IS HIP HOP. On another note u said that you've been listening 2 some slow jams and i do have some reccomendations that maybe you'll like. Majic by Joe, i can change your life by lloyd, makeyouhappy by musiqsoulchild, fragile remix w/wale by chrisette michele, never knew i needed by ne-yo, bulletproof by raheem devaughn, and greatness by chris brown. the list goes on but i'll give these first lol. Here are some other songs that i reccomend… bird's eye view, coastin pt.1, and caged bird by zion I, bonanza by charlie smaarts, good clothes by little brother, lights please by j.cole, walk these streets by rakim, and for what it's worth by skyzoo. I told u that im a big fan of music lol. thanks 4 reading our comments. Go Thunder!! U GO BOI!!! Lol!

If you like Wale, you will be amazed by Murs. He's from LA and is in a group called Living Legends. HIs style is really laid back and he has to be one of the smartest, most interesting and original rappers out today. Check out his albums “End of the Beginning” or “3:16 The 9th Edition”

Also I dont know why I think you would like this band, but check out Sharon Jones and the Dap Kings. Great James Brown-style Funk.

I haven't really listened to much Wale, I'm gonna start though and see whats up. I know I'll like it, I'm just a fan of hip-hop. But I love southern hip hop, it's the best. I think the mixtape game is what makes southern hip hop better. I really enjoy listening to mixtapes because they are more personal and raw/uncensored than an album. Mixtapes do a better job at introducing the listener to the true personality and mind of an artist. Here are some Artists and Mixtapes I like right now are: Lil Wayne – No Ceilings, Young Dro – R.I.P. Mixtape, Young Jeezy – Trappin Aint Dead & USDA Mixtape. I'm not the biggest Gucci Mane fan, but his last few mixtapes, “Burrprint 3-D” and the “Cold War” mixtapes, were very good. Lil Boosie, T.I., and Outkast are some other favorite artists. I don't do slow jams.

    John

KD – good game last night… you can tell KG has respect for you. You've earned it. I've enjoyed watching you play this season… got to sit next to your brother a few weeks ago when the Clippers were in town. He is a good dude. Just read your blog post and thought I'd mention that we just completed an album with music from all around the world this year. I work at a church down in Norman and travel overseas multiple times a year. The album will be delivered in mid-December… I'd love to give you a copy and see if you like it. It's definitely a heavy dose of culture. I'd love to buy you lunch, give you this CD and even bring you to church some Sunday down in Norman. Just holler – Adam.Barnett@journeychurch.tv.

Check out Joe Budden's Escape Route and Mood Muzik Series. It's personal, introspective, rap music.

  • Tamara

I really like how you and most of the “future of basketball” players are really in tune with their fans! anyway I'm a big fan of music myself and if you like Keri Hilson than you'll love ELECTRIK RED their album How to be a Lady Volume 1 has so much variety and it'll put you in the mood to do whatever (my little PSA for them lol) But they also have a youtube video of a freestyle about you! You should check them out!

  • tonjua

Hey KD I'm a big fan. Right now I'm listening to Boney James-Send One Your Love. I hope your into jazz, because this is good one to get you in the mood for anything.
